Aronia melanocarpa 'Morton'
Common Name: Iroquois Beauty black chokeberry / syn. Photinia melanocarpa
Nectar and pollen attract a variety of pollinators
Birds eat the berries in winter
Beautiful white flowers in spring
Yellow, orange and red fall color
`Iroquois Beauty` is a more compact selection
This shrub has got it all, nectar for the pollinators, fruit for the birds, beautiful flowers and a great fall color for us. It would make a great substitute for the non-native and in many places invasive, Russian Olive. It’s easy to grow in a wide range of soils in full sun or part shade. It tolerates boggy soil and is often found in wetlands. You could certainly plant them in a rain garden. The fruit is very tart but can be made into jellies. The berries are high in antioxidants and gaining some acclaim as a superfood. Keep in mind these will form suckers which can either be removed or left to form a colony.
