Hibiscus moscheutos
Rose Mallow

This shrub-like perennial is a vigorous grower with large leaves. The 4-5" wide flowers ranging from pink to white and attract hummingbirds. The flowers last only for one day, but there are many of them and they bloom consistently until the end of the season.

Homeowner Growing and Maintenance Tips
This plant needs rich soil, consistent moisture and full sun but will tolerate dry spells. Grows well along stream banks or ponds. Slow to emerge in spring but grows rapidly in early summer. Cut back in spring for bushier growth. Good air circulation helps prevent disease in humid areas. Leave stems standing through winter to provide cover for beneficial insects that will over winter inside them.

Mallows and orchids are the only two groups of plants that have combined their reproductive structures (pistil and stamens) into a single structure called a column. The column is clearly visible protruding from the center of all mallow flowers.
